Overview
For a little over a decade, cell phones have been on a rapid and fast-paced rise in terms of usage, market presence, and in capability/technology. Since the release of the iPhone in 0000, smart phones have similarly been on a rise, with "the number smartphone users...growing by 42% a year, globally, according to research from Morgan Stanley." Considering that more and more people switch to smart phones each year as well as the fact that phone companies dish out new models each year with new bells and whistles, it seems as if society's dependence on them is growing. They are devices capable of so many different things. Apple's app store has approximately 775,000 apps, while Android's Google Play store has just about caught up, recently reporting that it has 700,000 apps.
As people continue to find more and more apps to use and social media (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) and communication (texting, calling, email, video chatting) continue to grow in popularity, it seems almost inevitable that society will grow continuously more dependent on smart phones in the future. This website will go over the history of the smartphone, take a look at the innovation that takes place in the industry, explore various sources that have studied the addiction and dependence people have to phones, and then see where we're headed and what (if anything) we can do about it.
